Where you can get free school lunches this summer

Summer is officially here, and that means more students are at home full time enjoying the break in school. But that may put an extra financial burden on their parents who have to feed them from morning to night. Two years ago, California became the first state in the U.S. to approve the federally-funded Universal Meal Program which provided free breakfasts and lunches to all California school children regardless of income. With most schools closed for the summer, children are now eating meals at home.

The Orangevale-Fair Oaks Food Bank knows the high price of food items is rough on a family budget and maybe some weeks it’s just difficult to buy all the food you need to feed a family. The San Juan Unified School District has eight schools in Sacramento County that are providing free lunches during the summer. Some are offering breakfast as well. Three of the schools are in our area. Here is a list:

Will Rogers Middle School: June 10-Aug. 9 (Mon-Fri) 4924 Dewey Drive, Fair Oaks

Breakfast 7:35 a.m.-7:45 a.m. Lunch 10:45 a.m.-11:15 a.m.

Kingswood K-8: June 17-July 12 (Mon-Fri) 5700 Primrose Drive, Citrus Heights

Breakfast 8:40 a.m.-9 a.m. Lunch 11:30 a.m.-noon.

San Juan High School: June 17-July 11 (Mon-Thursday) 7551 Greenback Lane, Citrus Heights

No breakfast. Lunch 11:30 a.m.-noon.

The Fair Oaks Public Library also offers free “Lunch at the Library” Tuesday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m.

Several churches in our area offer free dinners during the week.

Redeemer Covenant Church, 6800 Main Ave., Orangevale Tuesday 6-6:45 p.m.

Divine Savior Catholic Church, 9079 Greenback Lane, Orangevale Thursday 6-6:45 p.m.

First Baptist Church, 8998 Central Avenue, Orangevale Wednesday 6-6:45 p.m.

A reminder that the Orangevale-Fair Oaks Food Bank will be closed July 1-5 for the Fourth of July holiday.
